*cues* Drummer exploding!!!

Combichrist live at the Globe theatre 2007
Combichrist's singer Andy LaPlegua backlit by the drummer reaching critical mass and exploding!!

Seriously the two drummers were fucking amazing. You could have powered a suburb for a week just from their kinetic energy alone.  Add to that Andy carving up the rest of the stage and it amounts to a bloody wild show. :D

The lighting rocked - I still wanted a big more front of house white flashes to work with but luckily I didn't have the three song rule to stress over and through the set I managed to burn through 7Gig of shots and grab a few frames I'm really happy with.

This shot was actually blown out so badly I thought it would be a throw away but Lightroom's RAW conversion pulled it back with so much more detail than I'd expected and the effect looked much cooler than I thought it would. Good thing I don't shoot JPEG!

The Globe theatre recently upgraded their lights and if the gig had been a week earlier it wouldn't have been worth shooting at all... not without flash anyway.

Love that fictional remix of Biovital :)

I know what you mean about the drummers. The guy with the spiked mohawk... damn, the guy looked like he was on the verge of ripping the drums apart with his fingertips. That was such a cool look :)

Did you get any good shots of the guy?

I'll upload the other shots soon - I'm sitting on three deadlines at once at the moment and need to knock everything over so I can deal with a wedding on Thursday and then the Abbey Fri-Monday. ahhh shoot me. lol

I did get action shots but they didn't work out as well as I wanted as they were in the dark too often

Love those shots! I had the same complaint about the Sydney lighting. It was an absolute nightmare to work with, except for the odd white flashes and blue flashes. I'm thinking I'll need to get a lens that's f.2 or something.
I think the only other complaint I had was simply a photography one - Andy was so amazingly energetic, it was impossible to get a non blurry shot of him! That and one of the drummers was a bit angsty. But twas an awesome experience down here, and like you, I went through heaps of memory.
I had just under 800 shots, that I've reduced to 300. Still working my way through to pick which are the most usable. Nice not
having the 3 song rule hey!
Did you use a tripod for anything?

for most of their gig I was using the 30mm F/1.4 which is a Sigma a mate loaned me to see if I might want to buy it from him. It's got a niggly squeeky focus ring, is useless for manual focus, and often likes to backfocus as well.

I sat as close as I could for most of the gig with the camera in AF-continuous mode to keep up with Andy's non stop energetic zig zag across the stage. I was going to use my SB600 flash to power the SC29 AF illuminator with the flash in a pouch at my hip so it doesn't actually go off visibly (at 1/64th output) just to help with focusing but even that would never have kept up with Andy's movement.

All my shots are hand held. I usually hand hold shots down to about 1/4th sec and sometimes wish I could afford an image stabilising lens but in the mean time will make do with a couple of whisky shots to steady the hands. ;)

ahhh 1000 shots down, 200 to go.

Ah I see.

I've got an image stabilising lens. There's only so much they can do really.

Nice :)

If I had an IS lens and it was a serious prime and in the shorter range I'd throw the flash away... but they don't make them like that. dammit

hrmmm besides, daytime fill flash is a must with the harsh sunlight we get.
